Abstract

27,093. Arbetter, W. Dec. 14. Blind - stitching machines. - Relates to a blind-stitching machine of the type in which a curved needle is mounted so as to oscillate in a vertical plane in a bracket on a vertical shaft and is swung bodily to present the needle to the work alternately in line with the feed and at an angle to it, and consists in modifications of the needle-driving and bender mechanisms whereby the machine can be arranged to sew a blind-stitch seam consisting of stitches in line with the feed only, at an angle to the feed only, or alternately in line with and at an angle to the feed. The vertical shaft 18 of the needle bracket 17 is mounted in a sleeve 19 fixed in the machine head. For sewing the first two forms of seam, the shaft 18 is disconnected from the oscillating lever 32 by withdrawing the screw 33, and is clamped in the desired position by a screw 20. For sewing the lastmentioned form of seam, the clamping-screw 20 is withdrawn and the shaft is secured to the lever 32 by the screw 53, The lever 32 is adjustably operated from a cam through a lever 29, which is connected to the lever 32 by a pin 34 slidingly mounted in a slot in the lever 29. The position of the pin is adjusted by means of a screw 37. The bender is reciprocated by a lever 85 on a shaft 84 which carries two other levers, one being held up to a cam by a spring attached to the other. The cam shaft is driven from the main undershaft by spur - gearing. To meet the requirements that when the single stitch seams are being sewn, the needle bracket-shaft being fixed, the bender shall reciprocate at each switch and when the seam having stitches alternately straight and oblique is being sewn the bender shall reciprocate at each alternate stitch, alternative spur-gearings are provided. One gearing is of the ratio 1 : 1 and the other 1 : 2. The pinions on the cam-shaft are not keyed to the shaft but one or other of them is connected to it by a double dog clutch. The lever 85 acts directly upon a sleeve 71 surrounding the bender stock 70 which is screwed at its lower end into a milled nut 73 situated between the prongs of the forked end 72 of the sleeve. The height of the operative position of the bender can be adjusted by means of this nut. A small spring bears upon the milled surface and acts as a detent, and the nut can be clamped in position by means of a screw 75 across the gap of the fork. The work-support is pressed upwards by a spring 11 ; it can be depressed by a knee-operated lever 102 which bears on the projection 104. The feed is of the usual compound slide type. The horizontal slide 46 being operated by the lever 48, and the vertical slide 50 by a cam on a shaft 52 in the work-support.
