9168. Chenoweth, J. W. April 28. Compouncl engines.-A valve-chest containing an intercepting-valve is placed on the side of the valve-chests of the high and low pressure cylinders, and has ports 13, 12 leading to the high and low pressure valve-chests 7, 8, a port 14 connected to the high-pressure cylinder exhaust, and a port 15 connected to the atmosphere or a condenser. When thevalve 17, which consists of a plate pivoted at 18 and provided with a channel 22, is in the position for compound working, Fig. 2, the ports 12, 14 are connected, and the port 15 is closed. When the valve is in the position. for simple working, Fig. 5, the ports 14, 15 are connected, and the port 12 is open to high-pressure steam.
