Abstract

190,743. Stodder, E. D. July 22, 1921. Wave energy, utilizing.-In wave motors of the type in which the motion of a float acted on by the waves is transmitted to converting-mechanism, such as pumps, the upward and downward movement of the float actuate separate convertors, those actuated by the upward movement being of greater capacity than those actuated by the downward movement. Between the columns of a pile are arranged floats B, sufficient space being allowed to permit movement in all directions. To each corner of each float B is connected a cable D, Figs. 1 and 8, the upper part of which is wrapped around a drum J and is counterweighted at F. Similar cables D<1> are connected to the lower corners of the float B and passing around sheaves E mounted on rings Z' are wrapped around drums J<2>. Each of the drums J, J<2> is converted through ratchet gearing to pumps so that the drums J drive their pumps on a downward movement of the float while the drums J<2> drive them during an upward movement, the pumps driven by the drums J<2> being of greater capacity than those driven by the drum J. In order to adjust the apparatus according to the intensity of the waves, each of the drums drives a series of pumps which may bn clutched to the drums in anv combination. To prevent the floats from striking against the columns X, Fig. 10, they are attached to chains C passing around collars Z mounted to slide on the columns. To each of these collars are attached cables d passing around sheaves e mounted on a fixed ring on the column X and carrying counterweights f.
