Abstract

24,085. Davey, H., and Davey, H. N. Oct. 31. Elastic-fluid turbines.-Turbines are driven by a mixture of hot air and steam, or a mixture of combustion products and steam. In one modification, the two fluids do not mix until exhausted from the turbine. Combustion products pass from a combustion chamber a, Fig. 1, upwards through a heater b, thereby heating air drawn in by a fan d. The combustion products then raise steam in a generator c, which passes along a pipe g to a turbine-wheel f, after which it mixes with the hot air passing through the heater b. The mixture drives a turbine-wheel e and exhausts into the combustion chamber a, thereby furnishing the required oxygen. In a modification the combustion chamber a, Fig. 2, is surrounded by a generator c. The lower part of a turbine-wheel e is driven by the combustion products, and the upper part by steam from the generator. The flow of steam is controlled by a valve m. The mixture exhausts into a condenser h, the condensed steam being removed by a suitable pump, and the residual gas being withdrawn by a fan d. In a further modification the combustion products, on leaving the combustion chamber a, Fig. 3, raise steam in a generator c. The steam acts upon a turbinewheel f and then, mixed with the combustion products, acts upon a turbine e. The mixture next passes through a condenser h, whence the residual gas is withdrawn by a fan d. In a further modification, the combustion products are used to supply heat to a heater b, Fig. 4, and the generator c. Steam from the generator acts upon a turbine-wheel f. It exhausts into the heater b where it is mixed with air supplied by a fan d, and the mixture then acts upon a turbine e and exhausts into the combustion chamber a.
