Abstract

20,944. Waller, W. Sept. 21. Metal, sheet, seaming and joining. -In a canseaming machine, with a constantly rotatable table of the type described in Specification No. 29,432, A.D. 1906, means are provided for seaming cans of rectangular or other irregular forms. Improved means for clamping and ejecting the work are also provided, whereby any cans placed incorrectly on the chucks are not clamped and are thus saved from injury. The rotary table, consisting of upper and lower portions a<1>, a<2>, is driven by bevel-gearing b<2>, b<3>, ball bearings c being provided. In the form shown, the upper chucks i' are driven by chain gearing from a fixed gear-wheel f and carry cams i which control the movement of arms j, j<1>, Fig. 3, to which are pivoted toggle-operated arms k<1> carrying the seaming-rollers. In a modification, Fig. 6, rollers k<2> of successive contours are mounted on a pivoted plate r, mounted on a slide and operated by a cam r<5> to engage the work, intermittent rotation to bring successive rollers into engagement being obtained from a cam-operated quadrant t. In a further modification, Fig. 11, the pattern cam i is fixed, the seaming-rollers gyrating round the tin &c. to be seamed ; the rollers are toggle-operated by means of a bevel-ended casing 28, co-operating with a bevel roller 27, the casing being moved vertically to cause engagement. For clamping the work, a weighted lever u,Fig. 1, operates each lower chuck y<1> and runs on a cam-path u<2>, a rod v ejecting the work when the lever is raised. A lower cam-path u<4> is also provided, and if the can is incorrectly placed and the weighted lever thus cannot descend, the lever is operated' by the lower path and does not clamp and thus damage the tin. To provide a period of rest to enable the operator to feed work to the machine, the wheel f is mutilated, the teeth of the pinions f<1> which it engages being also slightly mutilated.
