Abstract

14,455. Liebeaux, G., and Hennebique, F. March 19, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Sleepers; rails, securing to sleepers.-Relates to reinforced cement beton sleepers for railways &c. which have recesses in their ends adapted to receive wood blocks for supporting the rails, and consists in means whereby these blocks can be renewed without disturbing the rails or sleepers. Figs. 3 and 4 show sectional side view and plan of an arrangement particularly intended for sleepers used with "Vignole" rails. The recess' in the sleeper is made sufficiently large to admit also a cement block or key g which assists in maintaining the wood block c in position. The blocks are secured by transverse keys or spikes d, which may be combined with, or replaced by, wedges such as described in Specification No. 14,453, A.D. 1907. To renew the wood block, the block g is first removed and the block c is then slipped into its position and similarly removed. A flange h, Fig. 7, may be formed on one or more of the faces of the recess to support the wood blocks. Fig. 9 shows an arrangement intended for use when chairs are employed. Two recesses are here formed in the end of the sleeper, the wood block c<1> in each recess carrying one end of the chair. When two chairs are used on each sleeper, as at rail joints, two wood blocks are used in each recess as shown in Fig. 12. Direct contact of the rail and sleeper is avoided by allowing the wood block c to project above the sleeper, or a sheet of felt may be interposed. The rail can be given a suitable inclination by casting a bed of cement on the sleeper when laid. On tramways, the end portions of the sleepers are used with the removable wood blocks.
