Abstract

14,453. Liebeaux, G., and Hennebique, F. Nov. 29, 1906, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1001]. Sleepers; rails, securing to sleepers. - Reinforced cement beton or ferroconcrete railway sleepers are formed with end portions a, Fig. 7, having recesses 2 of trapezoidal section, in which wooden blocks c are secured for carrying the rails and through which the ballast or soil can be rammed before the blocks care inserted; the end. portions of the sleepers are connected by two concrete members b. Figs. 8 and 9 show longitudinal and transverse sections respectively, taken through the end portions of the sleeper so as to show the form of the recess 2 and wood block c. The blocks are arranged so that the fibres of the wood are in the direction of the length of the sleeper, and are secured in position by steel wedges d driven into the wedge-shaped spaces 3, 4 formed in the sides of the blocks c and recesses 2. The object of this arrangement is to secure the, block, while at the same time permitting it to expand laterally due to moisture. Figs. 11 and 12 show modifications in which a strengthening cross-bar e is used, and two or more recesses 2 are formed in the ends of the sleeper. Any recesses not filled with a wood block can be utilized along with the recesses 1 for ballasting purposes. Fig. 13 shows an arrangement by which a wood block can be renewed without disturbing the whole of the sleeper fastenings. The block is made so that it can be removed through the bottom of the recess when a portion of the ballast has been removed, and is secured in position by running rapidlysetting cement motar 5 between the end walls. To release the block, the motar is removed. The blocks c may be made of suitable agglomerates instead of wood, and the reinforcing of the concrete is preferably carried out on the Hennebique system.
