Sewage, treating; settling; bacteriological processes; sludge, treating; scum, removing.-The impurities that collect at the bottom of a settling- chamber are passed directly into a second chamber for decomposition. With the arrangement shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the liquid passes under the wall d into the settling-chamber a, scum being directed through openings e into the chambers b. Impurities settling in the chamber a pass through apertures c into the chambers b at a height below the layer of scum but above the bottom layer of mud. The apertures c are constructed with overlapping edges so that gaseous or gas-lifted particles cannot pass upward through them. The chambers b may be connected by orifices f. Two other arrangements are described ; in one of these the settling-chamber surrounds a decomposing-chamber, while in the other it is within a decomposing- chamber.
