Abstract

9919. Smal, P. April 29. Elastic-fluid turbines.-Relates to means for keeping constant the pressures of the hot and cold air in a hot-air engine working in a closed cycle. The type of engine to which these means is applied is shown in Fig. 1, in which the hot-air source is indicated at 1, the cold-air source at 2, the compressing-chamber at 5, and the expansion chamber at 3. The chambers 3, 5, which may be those of reciprocating engines or turbines, are provided with distributing-devices 4, 6, respectively. The hot-air source is connected by a pipe 11 with a regulator r of any well-known construction, which controls the Stephenson link used to actuate the distributing- device 6, so as to vary the cold-air supply to the compressor 5. A suitable form of regulator is shown in Fig. 2, and, instead of a link as shown, it may actuate a throttling-device. To control the pressure of the cold air, a suitably-loaded relief valve s is placed on the delivery pipe 13 of the pump m which forces atmospheric air into the cold source 2.
