Abstract

8876. Hardy, G. H. April 17. Fixed-abutment type with axially-sliding vanes. Relates to improvements in rotary engines of the type described in Specification No. 3213, A.D. 1890, and consists in the arrangement of several collateral parallel-sided chambers on one shaft and in the utilization of one vane for more than one chamber. Figs. I and II represent a rotor carrying four series of vanes sliding across the annular passages constituting four adjacent working chambers. The top abutment has barriers B closing the first and third chambers, while the bottom abutment has barriers B*` closing the second and fourth chambers. The vanes e are actuated by sine-curved cams working between fixed rollers F, F*. Fig. III gives an internal view showing the abutments. Fig. IV sbows the admission ports P. The casing is eased off where admission takes place as shown in Figs. III and IV. The sine-curved cams may be fixtures, and, as shown in Fig. VIII, are the terminals of the inner cylinder a'. In this case the vanes bear rollers V which press against the cam-surfaces and are moved bytension. High-pressure steam enters the central chamber 4, and passing out is led to the adjacent chambers 2, 6. The outflow of these two chambers is led round to the inlets of the four chambers 1, 3, 5, 7 on the opposite side, and then exhausts. The abutments are adjustable by set-screws S. The Specification also describes and illustrates a similar type of engine in which longitudinally divided vanes are used. The cams used are those described in Specification No 29,511, A.D. 1906. In other modifications, the elliptical curvature is interrupted at the transition period and resumed after an interval of one-eighth to one-quarter of a circle. Specifications No. 253, A.D. 1863, No. 2758, A.D. 1868, No. 1247, A.D. 1874, No. 2499, A.D. 1875, No. 5181, A.D. 1883, Nos. 2334 and 17,572, A.D. 1890, No. 9602, A.D. 1892, Nos. 15,333 and 16,975, A.D. 1898, No. 13,992, A.D. 1899, No. 17,484, A.D. 1900, No. 20,745, A.D. 1901, No. 1280, A.D. 1903, No. 25,377, A.D. 1904, and No. 6107, A.O. 1906, are also referred to.
