Abstract

5083. Moodie, R. March 2. Separating grain, minerals, &c.-Relates to a modification of the apparatus described in Specification No. 1455, A.D. 1885, for separating or ,grading substances of different sizes or specific gravities, and separating fine particles of dust from air. The granular substance, such as crushed grain, minerals, &c., is fed on to a rotary disk G, Fig. 1, and descends between guides or baffles F, where it meets an upward current of air from a fan C carried by a vertical shaft a. The finer particles are carried between a series of disks D' on the shaft a into a revolving cylinder E, where they may be allowed to accumulate and fall off. A further separation takes place at the inlet to the fan C, the air with the suspended particles passing between close-set disks D' carried by the cylinder E. The coarse and fine particles are discharged from the conical bottoms of the outer and inner chambers A, B, respectively. In a modification, the materials are fed into a cylinder K, Fig. 4, perforated at the lower part, and are agitated by vertical projections or blades carried by a feed disk L, the tiner particles passing through the perforations on to a rotary distributing-cone J, while the larger particles pass out by a spout M. For removing the accumulated dust from the cylinder E, two vertical swivel blades 0 carried by a sleeve N on a shaft a, are kept in contact with the cylinder by centrifugal force and revolve with it, and may be held stationary by a stop Q actuated by a rod P. The disks may be flat, corrugated, convex, serrated, or woven, and the spaces between them may be varied by means of ferrules, or by springs. The disks may be in a separate chamber from the fan, and for separating dust from air and gases, may be mounted on an horizontal axis. A series of fans and sets of disks may be arranged in a single casing.
