Abstract

2702. Galpin, P. H., and Love, W. Feb. 2. Embossing. - An arrangement of pressure rollers for rolling metal sheets, calendering or finishing paper or fabrics &c., in which a series of hydraulic bearings is used, is designed to distribute the pressure equally along the rollers. The main pressure rollers a, Fig. 1, are supported by supplementary rollers b, b<1> held by hydraulically supported d bearings c, c<1> equally spaced and encircling reduced portions k of the rollers. The rollers project beyond the end bearings, as shown, in order to distribute the pressure uniformly. The rollers have reduced ends engaging slotted guide-blocks d, d<1> capable of free vertical movement. The bearings are connected by rods f, Fig. 3, to pistons working in cylinders g, g<1> which are mounted by means of spherical bearings g on beams h, h', the upper beam being capable of being raised, lowered, or canted by screws h. Each cylinder g is provided with pipes o, o<1>, fitted with separate cocks s, s<1> and connected to a four-way cock p, by which either pipe may be connected to a common liquid supply q by a branch q or to a common return pipe r, by a branch r', in order either to apply pressure to the bearings or to raise the supplementary rollers b. The cocksp are geared together by toothed wheels r<2>, r', and are operated simultaneously by a common shaft r<3>. In the lower cylinders g<1> the water acts on one side only of the pistons. A modification is described, in which the rollers b, b<1> are dispensed with, and the rollers a have end bearings, the area of the pistons of which is half that of the intermediate bearings, in order to equalize the pressure.
