Abstract

29,072. Brown, H. G. Dec. 20. Semaphore signals.-Electrically-operated semaphore signals are driven by a motor through an epicyclic gearing. The motor 9, Fig. 1, through a worm and wheel drives one of a pair of bevelwheels 1, 2 gearing with an intermediate bevelwheel 4 carried on the shaft 5 at right-angles to the shaft 3. The other wheel 2 carries stops 13 engaging with an abutment 14 moved in and out of operative position by an electro-magnet 15 connected in parallel with the driving-motor. A number of stops 13 may be arranged on the wheel 2, far enough apart to allow the motor to attain full speed before the stop engages the abutment 14. The wheel 2 is then stopped, and the pinion 4 causes the shaft 5 to rotate about the shaft 3 and set the signal to clear. An extension of the shaft 5 carries contacts 8, 21 to break the motor circuit when the signal is moved to its desired position. Fig. 5 shows the arrangement for a three-position signal. The contact 8, 19 in the motor circuit is broken when the signal is at 'caution' and the contact 21, 22 is made, so that when the switch 20 is closed, either manually or by a relay magnet, the motor circuit is again completed and the signal driven to 'clear.' The circuit of the abutment magnet 15 is controlled only by the main switch 17, which may be controlled by a train contact or otherwise.
