Abstract

19,807. Sheffield, G. H., and Brush Electrical Engineering Co. Sept. 5. Motor road vehicles.-The body and underframe of a motor road omnibus, char-a-bane, &c. are made as one metal structure consisting of longitudinal girder plates a, b, Figs. 1 and 3, connected to the end plates j, k of the vehicle ; the inner girders b are connected by channel cross-bearers p and flanged floor plates u, and the upper edge of the inner girder b is connected to the lower edge of the outer girder a by an horizontal plate n which serves to support the seating of the vehicle. The girder a consists of a plate c with a flat bar e at the top and an angle d at the bottom, and the - girder b consists of a plate g secured to an angle f at the top and to an angle sill h at the bottom. The girders are connected to the ends j, k of the vehicle by angles m, and at the rear end bars h<1> for supporting the platform x<1> are secured to the sills h. At the front end of the vehicle, the girder b is narrowed to provide a support for the bonnet of the motor. The front end of the vehicle consists of steel plates formed with window openings j<1>, Figs. 3 and 4, framed with flat or angle bars j<2>, and is strengthened by an angle t<3> and by a frame t, t<1>, t<2> of angle-bars riveted to the plates. The rear end k is formed with a doorway with a framing of angle-iron. The roof r<1>, Fig. 1, of the vehicle is supported by T-bars q<1>, riveted at the lower end to the girder a and connected at the upper end to the roof members r and to longitudinal stretchers q. The driver's portion of the vehicle is enclosed at the sides by plates s riveted to uprights q<2> and to the front end j. The engine and gear-box are attached to sills v, Figs. 1, 2, and 4, which extend between a cross-bearer p and the headstock p<2>, and are braced by plates w, v<2>, v<3> connecting the sills v to the sills h. In a modified form, the girders a, b are replaced by a single girder, comprising a curved plate c, Fig. 8, a bar d, and a sill h, and the seating is carried by angles n<1>, continuous between the ends j, k of the vehicle and supported by stays n<2>, n<3> from the side posts q<1>. In a chara-banc, the roof is dispensed with, and the seats are mounted on the sides of the vehicle, which may be connected together by cross-bracing.
