Abstract

18,269. Reisert, H. Aug. 14. Filters, cleansing. -Filters are cleansed by a sufficiently rapid reverse flow to float the filtering- material, the washing.water being accumulated in such a position that it passes through no pipes or other inlet of limited area. With the apparatus shown in Fig. 1, the washing - water is stored in the space m, from which it is forced up within the cylinder d and through the filter by a gas, preferably air, admitted to the space m through the pipe l. The impurities are carried down the column c. In the case of a filter working under pressure, the air may be driven from the space m and compressed in the chamber p by the inflowing liquid. Otherwise, the chamber p may be provided with an air inlet k, an inlet i for water under pressure and a water outlet h. A single compressor may serve for more than one filter, and in large installations columns c may be situated between each pair of filters. With the apparatus shown in Fig. 2, a reverse flow is obtained from the vessel q by the admission of air through the cock v. The vessel q is filled by withdrawing the air by means of an injector t. In a modified form of apparatus, the washing-water is drawn into the vessel q by the condensation of steam therein. Specifications No. 27,447, A.D. 1897, and No. 21,274, A.D. 1898, are referred to.
