Abstract

17,997. Jackson, J. E. Evans-, [Oesterreichischer Verein fur Cellulosefabrikation]. Aug. 10. Foul waters, treating; straining.- Waste waters containing recoverable filaments or fibres from cellulose, paper, wood-polishing,' or other factories are supplied through a chancel 1 to a drum strainer 2, which retains the coarser solids but allows the finer to pass on with the water to a channel 10 supplying three finer straining- drums 12. The retained solids are lifted by two curved sieves within the drum 2 and are washed by a jet from the pipe 6 into inclined channels 5, which discharge into a well 7 having a perforated stone floor. The drums 12, Fig. 4, have ribs 13, which lift the solids into four channels 15 discharging into a similar well. The side walls of the channels 15 are slanting, so that water lifted in the channels flows over the lower edge. In a modification, a number of the discharge channels are formed by partitions radiating outwards from a cone or pyramid attached to the drum shaft. Fig. 8 shows a single fixed channel 20 supported by a bearer 21'attached to a knife-edged disk 22 on the drum shaft, the channel being steadied in position by a counterweight 23.
