School desks and seats.-School desks, benches, and the like have their standards or supports so constructed as to be adapted for the interchange and replacement of parts and for dismounting. Wrought-iron standards A, A<1>, Fig. 1, fit into cast-iron base and head sockets B, B', D, D<1>, the parts being firmly connected by bolts, screws, &c. The socket D is provided with lugs W<1> and brackets O, P for the attachment of a book receptacle W and a desk U, respectively, while the socket D' has an extension H for carrying a seat. The base parts B, B<1> are joined by cast-iron rails C provided with castors and feet, and the pairs of standards are braced by means of through-bolts G &c. and by a cross-bar carried by sockets G<1> on the bolt G. A foot-rail N is attached to flanges N' on the bases B, and a reversible seat back K, pivoted at M, is locked adjustably by a nut-and-cam device. The brackets 0, P may have a desk stop P' and knuckle hinges X, X', or they may be movable on notched supports X<2> or ratchets. The above construction of standards is described in connexion with a tilt-up seat carrier I, or a double-hinged carrier Y, Y<1> Fig. 2, adapted to be raised from either end, and with a desk U consisting of a centrally-hinged carrier Q which depresses backwards and to which a supplementary carrier R is hinged and made adjustable by means of a quadrant S and pin S<1>. A stiffening-rail T supports books, drawing-boards, &c. when the desk is thrown back. The part D may be dispensed with, the box W then being fixed to the uprights A and carrying the brackets O, P.
