Abstract

4302. Noble, T. Feb. 21. Drain pipea.-In a method of boring wells or drains, a pipe is driven into the ground and water or air under pressure is forced into the pipe. The water drives the material at the bottom of the pipe to one side and allows the pipe to descend. In most cases water escapes upward only in sufficient quantities to keep the pipe slimy. Where water is ecarce, compressed air may be used. The method may be used for sinking vertical wells or for driving pipes horizontally to serve as drains. In the arrangement shown for driving a vertical well, the pipe F, connected by means of a flexible tube D with a pump B, is provided with a bar G which is pressed and raised by two men. When a high pressure of water is available, the pump may be dispensed with. When one length of pipe becomes embedded, a second is screwed to it, and this goes on till the required depth is reached. When driving wells of larger diameter, a small pipe is driven as described above and a larger pipe is driven round it, the smaller pipe being then withdrawn.
