Abstract

3853. Brewer, G., [Muhitdin Bey]. Feb. 16. Fixed-abutment type. - Rotary engines of the type illustrated in Fig. 2 are arranged for compound working. The exhaust steam from a highpressure chamber 11 passes by a short duct 23 in the casing to a low-pressure chamber 12 of similar construction but of greater capacity. In Fig. 1 two sets of such chambers are shown, the inlets 13, 14 for high-pressure steam being at the ends. The planes of the pistons 9 in adjacent chambers are mutually perpendicular so that a balanced engine with practically no dead point is obtained. The engine may run in either direction, and for reversing purposes the admission of steam is controlled by a cylindrical valve 15 operated by a handle 28. Four passages 19, 20, 21, 22 lead from each chamber, but the valve 15 is so made that only one passage on one side of the spring-pressed abutment 7 is opened to steam, while two passages on the other side are opened to exhaust, e.g. when, as shown in Fig. 2, steam enters by the passage 19, the passage 20 is closed by the valve and the passages 21, 22 are both opened to exhaust. In a modification, the diameter of the low-pressure chamber is greater than that of. the high-pressure chamber, and, instead of a single horizontal valve spindle extending the whole length of the casing, separate valves with vertical spindles connected by rods to work together are fitted to each chamber. The pistons 9 have a spring- pressed bearing-piece 10 at one or both ends, and in a modification rocking friction bars 30, Fig. 9, are also provided. Drain water may be run off through passages 29. The engine casing is made in two parts, the upper portion being removable , for cleaning purposes.
