Abstract
3211. Bosch, F. van den, and Bosch, A. van den, [trading as Gocher Oelm³hle, Geb. van den Bosch], and M³ller, O. Feb. 10, 1905, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Cellulose, non-fibrous; dyes from natural products. -Consists in treating cotton-seed husks or other waste cotton so as to obtain cellulose suitable for making paper, spinning, or treating chemically to obtain explosives, artificial filaments, rubber substitutes, and plastic compositions. In addition, a dye-stuff and a substance similar to lac are obtained. The husks may have a suitable pre: liminary treatment to separate adherent cotton fibres. They are then boiled with alkali, separated from the liquid, and washed with water. The alkaline liquid contains a red dye - stuff, and resinous and waxlike substances which are precipitated by neutralizing the liquid. The washed husks are next treated with permanganate, then with sulphurous acid (hydrochloric acid and a bisulphite), and then with a chlorine bath such as chloride of lime. The strength of the bath is decreased as the proportion of cotton with the husks rises. The husks, after the alkali treatment, may be treated successively with chlorine baths of different strengths. If these baths contain alkali, cellulose is extracted from the husks, a white fibrous product being obtained which may be used instead of cotton. The chlorine bath is prepared preferably by adding a solution of sodium carbonate to a cold solution of chloride of lime.
