85. Kemper, R. E., and Kemper, A. Jan. 1. Feeding sheets. - Relates to a device for feeding c a r d s, envelopes, sheets of paper, &c. to, printing and other machines, described as applicable to a platen press. The device comprises a holder or table consisting of side frames A, Fig. 9 which support a transverse plate B, the rear face of which is ribbed as shown in Fig. 7 to engage the edge of a sloping plate C. The cards &c. are placed on edge on the sloping plate C between adjustable guides C', and press forward by gravity against the plate B. The arms A support two angle-plates D, adjusted and held by swing nuts d<2>, which rest on the top of the envelopes, cards, &c. to prevent more than one thereof being withdrawn at a time. Mounted in the bracket A is a cam shaft E, operated to make one revolution to each impression of the press by a chain r<2> from a sprocket-wheel on a shaft R' carrying a feed roller R. The shaft R<1> is rotated by a second chain 3 from the main driving-shaft of the press. Mounted in the arms A at the rear of the cam shaft E is a rock-shaft F carrying at one end an arm f, with a pin or roller f<1> which bears against a cam E<2> on the shaft E, and at the other an arm f controlled by a spring f The cam shaft F carries an arm G to the extremity of which is connected an arm g, provided with a strip or bar H, toothed on the edge near the pile of paper &c., in such a manner that the bar, during its downward movement, engages the first sheet and bends it forward over the feed roller R, which may be of wood, rubber, paper, or other material. The bar H is retained in contact with the pile by a spring g<3>. Loosely pivoted on the shaft F is a weighted arm T<1>, provided with a pin which engages a cam E<1> on the shaft E, and a pressure roller T, which, under the action of the cam E', descends on to the first sheet after it has been separated and bent forward on the roller R by the bar H. The arms A are provided with brackets A<1> for securing to the press or any other means of attachment may be employed. Additional separating devices may be provided, or, if desired, gripper separating devices may be employed instead of the toothed bar as described.
