Abstract

13. Wilson, W. B. Jan. 1. Tramways, paving.-Roads are paved with large natural stone slabs a, the required thickness being made up by the addition of an adhesive layer, or layers of bituminous or cementitious concrete b to the underside of the slabs. Holes c may be formed in this layer, longitudinally, transversely, or angled across each corner, so that the grouting-material may run in and bind the slabs together. The edges are also checked, angled, or otherwise formed to engage with one another,.and the upper surface of the slabs may be. formed to the contour of the road, and if necessary roughened. For paving tramways, the slabs may be the width of the track or made in two pieces as shown in Fig. 6, one edge of each being checked to fit the rail, and grooves may also be cut to: accommodate the tie-bars.
