Abstract

25,372. LachÞze, E. Dec. 21, 1904, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Spanners.-A box spanner is made with one of its jaws adjustable, and in order to reduce the dimensions of the head the strengthening-portions are provided in the interior. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the parts bare the strengthening-portions and the jaw B is adjusted by a rack and nut C, the shank having a ratchet-wheel E, engaged by the finger d of an independant pawl lever H, Fig. 3, which, when used as a long arm, is introduced into a hole G in the recessed socket F. To economize space, the bent end e of the pawl lever may be arranged to fit in the socket. The heads of the spanners may be interchangeable, a square-hole socket in the shank receiving a similar projection on the jaw portion, held rigid by a spring. For small nuts, the ratchet-wheel may be replaced by an hexagonal enlargement and the portion F may also be hexagonally shaped and provided with a hole for the insertion of an operating-pin. For nuts arranged at great depth, the shank is made plain and long and has a handle at its outer end. For motor-cars, a spanner of any size is arranged at each end of the same shank, the tail being bent round so that the lever arm for operating the larger nuts is larger than that for operating the other spanner, or the shank being straight and operated as in Fig. 1. In another form, the movable jaw Q, which is guided by two tongues l and grooves and is prevented from leaving its recess by a screw m sliding in a groove n, terminates in a wedge R and is operated against the action of a spring o by a square rod p, with which engages a screw q, rotated by a milled nut r, keyed to the square portion s. The nut can then be turned by a handle supported by the hollow tube T containing the rods.
