Abstract

17,248. Hart, E. W., and Durtnall, W. P. Aug. 25. Electric locomotives and motor vehicles.-Relates to the electric transmission of power on railway, tramway, or similar vehicles, boats, &c., employing a petrol, gas, or steam engine or a turbine as prime mover, and consists in using a generator having a revolving magnet or magnets and a stationary armature, so as to obviate the use of a commutator, the windings being preferably arranged for polyphase alternating currents. In addition, means are described for regulating the supply of fuel to the prime mover and for cooling the windings of the motor and generator. Fig. 1 shows the electric connexions, and Fig. 2 is an elevation of a vehicle with the invention applied. A single or multiple field-magnet a is mounted on the shaft b of a petrol or other motor c, for which it may act as a fly-wheel, and is arranged to revclve within or without a stationary armature d. The field-magnet a of the main generator is excited by a small generator e, controlled by a switch, which thus indirectly controls the output of the generator. From the armature winding d, three or more conductors f pass to the winding g of the stator of a polyphase alternating-current motor, the rotor h of which is of the wound or squirrel cage type. The shaft of this rotor is connected through differential gear to the road wheels. Between the generator and motor a magnetic clutch u is fitted so that at the highest speed a direct drive may be obtained. The switch, when swung into contact with the stud v, divides the current from the source e between the field a and the clutch u, and when swung into contact with the stud w, all the current passes through the clutch, the field a being shortcircuited by the bridge contact z. Instead of regulating the current in the generator field a, the shunt field of the exciter e may be regulated by an adjustable resistance. The vehicle may be started by running the exciter e as a motor, and means may be provided for electric braking. The supply of fuel to the prime mover may be controlled by suitable means, for example, the valves may be electrically operated and controlled from the switch. Owing to the absence of commutators or brushes, the generator or motor can bear abnormal loads for a short time without excessive sparking. Forced ventilation may be employed for the generator and motor, the windings being arranged so that they generate a draught while revolving, or fans being attached. The petrol motor, dynamo, and electromotor are mounted on an auxiliary frame, connected by vertical spiral springs with the main frame so as to minimize vibration,
