Stuffing- boxes, substitutes for; stuffing-boxes.-The shaft 21, Fig. 1, of a multiple expansion turbine is packed where it passes through the diaphragms 13 of the casing by means of loosely-mounted flanged sleeves 12 which the steam presses against the diaphragms. The nozzle valves 55, Fig. 7, of the turbine are made readily detachable by securing them by means of a separate flange 59 and sleeve 51 into which the valve spindle is screwed and which acts as a stuffing - box, being provided with packing held by a gland 61.
