Abstract

1995. Donlevy, J. P. L. Feb. 1. Typewriters.- Relates to a typewriter for printing or translating from the Morse or other code into ordinary or other characters. In the case of the Morse code, three keys are, preferably, used, one for the dashes, another for the dots, and the third for printing, feeding the papercarrier, and returning the type to zero. For other codes, three or more, preferably ten, keys are used. The types are carried upon one or more platens, magazines, cylinders, plates, or disks, and are brought successively into printing position by the dot and dash keys, which effect step-by-step adjustment in directions at right-angles. In the machine shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the types f are on spring.retained spindles g disposed in cylinders k secured to magazine plates l, and the printing is effected by means of a spring plunger 14 and key e. The type-magazine has horizontal adjustment on a frame n by means of a key d, and the frame n has vertical adjustment by means of a key c. The ma gazineis guided by flanged wheels p on barsoof the frame n, and is traversed by means of a bar m having a pin-and-slot connexion with a slide 3 connected to an arm 1 of a spring-returned sector y, which is provided with ratchet teeth for actuation by pawls 5, 6. The frame n is guided by rollers q, r, and is actuated by means of a rack s and pawls t, w. The pawls 6, ware released, for return of the parts to zero position, by means of trips 18 on bellcrank levers 17 connected with the key e. Fig. 4 shows a ten.key arrangement. The keys 32, 31, 30, 29 correspond with the key c and give two, four, six, and eight vertical step movements to the magazine, by means of racks 28, pinions 27, 26, 25, 24 on a shaft 23, a lifting-cam 22 on the shaft 23, and a second rack 21 on the frame n. The keys 33, 34, 35 similarly correspond with the key d.
