Abstract

190,461. Westinghouse Air Spring Co., Inc., (Assignees of McElroy, J. J.). Dec. 19, 1921, [Convention date]. Pneumatic springs.- Consists of a vehicle shock-absorber comprising a cylinder 3, having a piston dividing the cylinder into an air-tight cushion chamber and a relatively tight rebound check chamber 9, and a pump having one element 36 carried by the cylinder and the other by the piston, the pump inlet 31 communicating with a space between annular packings 6, 7 to withdraw surplus sealing oil or liquid and return it to the space 8. The piston rod 10 is connected to a vehicle spring 13. the connection being protected by a flexible boot 47, and the cylinder is connected to a frame horn 16. The cup packings 6, 7 are mounted on nuts 17, 18 forming the piston. The packing 6 is held in place by a tubular retainer 20 provided with oil holes 33 communicating with the valve inlet chamber, the outer space retaining oil to form a seal. The packings are extended by spring- pressed cone expanders 21. The piston and an extension 27 thereof are bored to form a pump barrel 28 in which works a hollow pump-rod 36 supported on the cap 4 and connected with the chamber 8 by a hole 40. Ball valves 29, 37 are provided at each end of the pump, and air mav be pumped into chamber 8, above the oil, through a tyre valve 44. Oil ducts 34 extend through the flanges 26 of the piston. A dust guard 51 has an oiling plug 54 with ducts 52, 53 leading to the piston-rod and to chamber 9. The volumetric efficiency of the pump is such as to render it incapable of pumping air during working. A coil spring may replace the chamber 9.
