Abstract

22,774. Smith, L. H. V., [trading as Smith & Co., W. H.]. Oct. 22. Waterproofing-compositions.-In the manufacture of boots and shoes, the leather soles are waterproofed by first soaking them in water to open the pores and then brushing into the flesh sides a composition made by melting together 7 lb. of tallow and 3 oz. of beeswax and adding 1 pint each of linseed, cod-liver, and neat's-foot oils. Plain tallow is then rubbed into the grain side of the leather. Subsequently; the soles are treated by heat and pressure as described in Specifications No. 1362, A.D. 1860, and No. 1119, A.D. 1877, [Abridgment Class Boots &c.], and No. 1648, A.D. 1891. The soles of fishing and sporting boots may be further waterproofed by immersing them in a solution of gutta-percha in carbon bisulphide.
