Abstract

8930. Whitwell, E. Aprii 19. Water-waste preventers; urinals.-When the seat T, Fig. 2, is released after use, the piston R, which is attached to a spindle Q fixed to the seat, is forced upwards by the spring S, and the air in the pipe G is compressed. Water having entered the pipe E, Fig. 1, by a small hole V, is forced over the bend at E' in the pipe E, when it descends into the soilpipe N. During the filling of the cistern, air is compressed in the part C, and this is now released, causing siphonage to ensue. The action is stopped at the required point by the admission of air at a small aperture in the end of a tube H, which is connected to the bend in the pipe E. The cylinder in which the piston R works is made nearly airtight by a gland Z. The air in the part C may also be liberated by an air cock L. In Fig. 3 is shown the arrangement employed when the basin is also to be used as a urinal, the end T of the hinged seat being connected to the piston-rod Q, so that the cistern is discharged on raising or replacing the seat according as the pipe G is connected to the rod-side of the cylinder P or to the other side. In this case, the piston is not fitted with a spring. When used with ordinary urinals, the pipe E, Fig. 1, is connected to the discharge pipe of the urinal, so that liquid flows into the pipe E and starts the flush ; or a hinged footboard may be placed so as to press upon the spindle Q as shown in Fig. 2.
