Abstract

4100. McElfatrick, S. Feb. 19, A.D. 1903, [date applied for under Patents Act, A.D. 1901]. Rails, securing to sleepers; sleepers.-Relates to a metallic railway sleeper which is adapted to hold the rails in position without the use of chairs. Fig. 1 shows a perspective view of the sleeper with the rails attached. The upper vertical web of the sleeper has two slots in it, as shown in Fig. 4, into which the rails fit easily. To secure the rails in position, a fastening-bar 9 is used, one for each rail. This bar is fixed to the web 1 by a bolt 10, and is shaped to fit over the rail flange. Upon one side of the bar a clamping-block 11 is secured so as to fill the space between the rail web and shoulder 6. This block may be adjustably fastened to the bar 9 by means of a tapered pin which will permit the same to be moved to a limited extent longitudinally in order to compensate for wear. In a modification, the bars 9 are made longer so as to contact at their inner ends, and so form a strainer bar for clamping the rails in position without the use of the block 11.
