Abstract

190,370. Luard, E. S., and Sidgwick, C. K. D. Dec. 23, 1921. Addition to 180,152. Multiple fastenings for railway-wagon doors; sliding bolts; fastenings controlled mechanically from a distance; hasp fastenings; seal fastenings. -In the fastening device described in the parent Specification, in which a pair of swing doors of a railway goods wagon are locked by a sliding bolt which is itself held against operation by a spring catch which can only be released by operating a handle remote from the bolt, necessitating the co-operation of two persons to release the doors, the sliding bolt actuates means for fastening or releasing a lower flap door and the door covering the handle operating the spring catch is spring- pressed to cover the handle and can be locked by a hasp having a padlock or seal lock applied to it. Fig. 6 shows the means locking the lower flap door 37. The left-hand swing door is closed first and the right-hand swing door is then closed and the lower flap door 37 swung up to its closed position. The bolt 1 is raised to engage a hole 4 in the angle iron 5 secured to the top of the wagon, and rotated to bring the hasp 6 over the eye 7 on the left-hand door and is secured bv a bar 8 sliding on the bolt. The rotation of the bolt enables the spring catch 12 to snap into the hole 9 in the head 10 of the bolt, rendering it impossible to release the bolt until the catch 12 is released through a long rod 14 provided with a handle 21 situated at some distance from the doors, as shown in Fig. 1. To a bracket 38 secured to the lower end of the bolt 1 is connected an arm 40, pivoted to the door at 41, by a pin-and-slot connection. To the other end of the arm 40 is pivoted a link 43 which is pivoted at its other end to a bolt 45. The bolt 45 coacts with an upright member 54 pivoted to one end of the arm 48 pivoted at 47 to the flap door 37. A second bolt 50 is pivoted to the other end of the lever 48. Fig. 6 shows the mechanism when the doors are fastened. When the hasp 6 is released after disengaging the catch 12, the bolt 1 may be depressed, releasing the right-hand door 3. The depression of the bolt 1 rocks the lever 40, lifting the link 43 and the bolt 45 and allowing the bolt 50 to fall by its own weight, bringing the ends of bolts 50, 45 flush with the edge of the flap door 37, and allowing all the doors to be opened. On operating the bolt 1 for closure, the reverse movements take place, fastening the doors 3 and fastening the flap door by the engagement of the bolts 50. 45 in the stirrups 52, 51 and 46, 55 respectively. The door 23, Fig. 2, covering the hole 22<a> giving access to the handle 21 is made of sheet metal and has four flanges 26 through pairs of which pass rods 27, 28. The rod 28 is fixed to the casing of the rod 14 and the door 23 slides upon it. The rod 27 is fixed to the door 23 and carries a spring 30 between a flange 26 and the partition 29a of the casing. The outer end of the rod 27 carries a collar 32 which forms a, stop for the closing movement of the door by abutting against the end wall 29 of the casing and also couples the rod to the shank of the button 31. To open the door, the hasp 33 is removed from the eye 36. to which it was previously secured by a padlock or seal lock, and raised to the position 35, shown bv the dotted lines in Fig. 4, disengaging the shank of the button 31, which can then be pressed inwards. This causes the collar 32 to push the door 23 sufficiently to one side to allow the fingers of one hand to be inserted to fully open the door to give access to the handle 21 for removing the catch 12 from the bolt. The spring 30 returns the door to its shut position. In the modification shown in Fig. 16, the hasp 33. instead of embracing the narrow shank of the button to prevent its being pushed in. engages a slot or cutaway part of a cylindrical sleeve 60 on an extension of the rod 27.
