Metal pipes and tubes; plates, securing tubes to.- Relates to the pipes and tubes which are employed in a form of locomotive steam boiler comprising water tubes, headers, and drums. The tubes that form the sides of the boiler, which is rectangular in cross-section, are placed in contact, the parts being flattened for that purpose. The tubes may be round or square, or square with round interiors. In Fig. 5, the tubes are shown as having reduced ends 93 which are expanded in place, the groove 98 assisting in the operation. To permit of the removal of a tube, the upper end 93 is made longer than the end 93<a>. To hold the tube in place, the filling-piece 96 is employed. Alternately, bushings screwed into the ends of the tubes may be expanded in the seatings or screwed therein. The ends of the tubes where expanded may be reduced in diameter. When the tubes are square on the outside, bushes with nipples are employed. The adjacent tubes of the firebox are connected together either by rivets or by means of double dovetailed key-pieces 45. Caulking-strips may be placed between adjacent tubes.
