20,149. Whitehouse, J. Oct. 19. Spark-arresters.-A guard-plate 18 is fixed in the smoke-box of a locomotive or other boiler furnace to prevent the passage of sparks to the vicinity of the line of draught produced by the exhaust of the engine. The guard-plate is fixed in front of the fire tubes or flues to the base of the smoke-box and to an adjustable sleeve 15, fitted to the exhaust pipe 13. A continuation of the exhaust pipe extends into the chimney 5, which has baffles 27 arranged to deflect the sparks and ashes through alternating openings into a chamber 8 formed by an outer casing which surrounds the chimney and the smoke-box. A spray pipe 25 sprays water over one wall of the lower part of the chamber 8, from which the ashes are removed through doors at or near the base. A perforated pipe 29, connected to a blower, may be fitted around the upper end of the exhaust pipe.
