Stufing-boxes.-A conical washer C is placed between the soft packing F and the flared and radially-split inner end of the screwed gland B of a stuffing-box for a condenser tube or a valve or cock spindle &c., to prevent the tearing of the packing when the gland is rotated and to expand the inner end of the gland and thus lock the gland in position when it is screwed home.
