Abstract
8446. Bentley, C. E. Nov. 14, A.D. 1902, [date applied for under Patents Act, A.D. 1901]. Embroidery; seams beads, attaching.-Relates to an ornamental openwork embroidery seam for connecting two pieces of lace, dress goods, or other fabric, or for ornamenting the face of a single piece of fabric. The embroidery cord 4, Fig. 1, is formed with loops 9 by one or more double twists 10, the loops being connected alternately on opposite sides of the seam, to the face (or back) of the fabric 1, 2, by single rows of lock or chain stitches 6. The loops 9 may also be formed in pairs or groups, as in the modification shown in Fig. 5. The intermediate portions 11 of the cord between the loops may or may not be provided with beads or analogous ornaments 5, which, when employed, are held in a substantially straight row, about the centre of the seam, by the twists of the loops 9. The beads or ornaments may be round, or cylindrical &c., and two or more of different sizes, colours, or designs may be strung on each portion 11 of the cord. The beads serve to protect the seam threads, cord, and fabric, and, in conjunction with the twists of the cord, serve to prevent the seam from collapsing.
