Abstract

3543. Wetter, J., [Heine & Co.]. Feb. 14. Terpene alcohols.-Relates to the manufacture of a rose-scented alcohol C10HO18, which may be used as a base for artificial perfumes, and consists in treating linalool, coriandrol, nerol, lavendol, aurantiol, and like unsaturated fatty terpene alcohols of the formula C10H18O, which boil at 195‹-200‹ C. and yield citrals on oxidation with chromic acid, or geraniol, or acetic or other esters of these alcohols, or essential oils containing these alcohols or their esters, or myrcene, linaloene, or other unsaturated fatty hydrocarbons of the formula C10H16, which yield linalools on hydration, with glacial acetic or other organic acids and sulphuric or other mineral acid, or substances, like acid sulphates, or zinc, aluminium or iron chlorides, which act in the same way as mineral acids. Organic acids, such as formic or acetic acid, may be used alone, either with or without the aid of pressure or the addition of acetates, such as sodium acetate, or else acetic or other fatty anhydride or aromatic anhydrides, such as phthalic anhydride, may be employed, with or without the aid of pressure, or the addition of acetates or other organic salts. The product is saponified with caustic alkali, the oil rectified by means of steam, and fractionated in vacuo. The higher boiling fraction which contains terpineol, geraniol, and the new alcohol, is treated with phthalic anhydride or anhydrides of other dibasic acids, thereby converting the primary terpene alcohols into phthalic esters. The esters are then converted into sodium salts by treating with dilute sodium carbonate, extracted with ether, re-precipitated by sulphuric acid, and saponified with potash, and the alcohols precipitated by water are rectified in vacuo, or with steam. The geraniol is removed by adding anhydrous calcium chloride with which it forms a compound insoluble in petroleum ether, and the new alcohol which remains is rectified or fractionated in vacuo or steam after removing the excess of petroleum ether. The product of the reaction of linalool &c. and acetic and sulphuric acids &c. may be treated directly with phthalic anhydride, as above, instead of first fractionating and then saponifying it. The new alcohol boils at 226‹ C. at ordinary pressure, has a specific gravity of 0À882 at 15‹ C., and is optically inactive or slightly dextro-rotatory. The alcohol may be dissolved in water, alcohol, essential or other fatty oil, or other solvents in making perfumes, or else added to other perfumes. For artificial oil of roses, a useful base consists of geraniol, citronellol, citral, phenylethyl alcohol, the new alcohol, and its acetate, while for artificial mignonette scent a useful base consists of benzyl alcohol, geraniol, and the new alcohol.
