Abstract

28,291. Malein, W. M. von. Dec. 22. Capsizing, preventing.-For the purpose of preventing boats from capsizing in a heavy sea or surf, floats are provided attached to outriggers, capable of being swung out from the sides of the boat. The floats c are shown in their operative position. They are attached to the outriggers b, which are pivoted on the standard a. When in use, the outriggers are secured by lashings or hooks h<1>. The floats are free to rotate on a horizontal axis. When the boat is used as a ship's lifeboat, capsizing is prevented while lowering or hoisting by using the float which is clear of the ship's side. When not in use, the floats swing back until they occupy a position behind the stern.
