Abstract

10,330. Dawson, A. T., and Silverman, L. May 5. Primers for ordnance cartridges. Fig. 1 shows a combined percussion and electric primer. The electric device consists of an insulated pin C, connected at the point C<3> to the casing by a wire bridge C', around which guncotton is twisted. The percussion device consists of a piston B, carrying the insulated pin C, and cupped at B' to provide obturation. The combined device is prevented from accidentally striking the cap D, by means of the metal disc A<3>, aided by the insulating- material B<3>. When the primer is ignited only by percussion, the pin C and piston B are made in one piece without insulation. When the primer has only electric ignition, as shown in Fig. 3, the hammer B and disc A<3> are dispensed with, and the pin C<x> is connected to the front of the explosive charge by a rod C<5>, an igniting-chamber being provided by the discs C, C<1> and screw washers C<6>, C<7>. Fuzes for projectiles.-Fig. 5. The hammer G, carrying the pin H, is held at safe by the metal disc A<3>, which gives way when the gun is discharged, allowing the hammer to move rearwards and the pin H to project, ready to explode the cap F as soon as the projectile strikes the target.
