Abstract

7469. Billaud, A. March 27. Furs.-Relates to machines for removing from furs the long and stiff hairs known as dog-hairs, while leaving the soft hair untouched. The skin is carried by an apron, which passes over the edge of a bar d and round the rollers c, e, b. All these parts, as well as the rotary brush w which smooths back the soft hair on the upper side of the sharply-folded skin, are carried by a frame comprising arms k, which are reciprocated by means of cams n acting on rollers p. When the frame or carriage k moves towards the left, the rotary brush w<1> rises under the action of levers x, y and cam z, and smooths back the soft hair on the underside of the bar d, leaving the strong and coarse hairs projecting. The brush w<1>then retreats, and the frame kmoves towards the right, the coarse hairs being sheared off between the helically-bladed knife 12 and the fixed blade 14. The feed of the apron is effected by means of worm-and-wheel gearing from a ratchet-wheel carried by the frame k, and co-operating with a pawl, which is rocked by the reciprocation of the frame k, owing to a linkwork connection with a fixed point on the frame of the machine. The shaft o is driven from the main driving-shaft r through toothed gearing t, u. The brushes are driven by belts, that which drives the brush w<1> being tensioned by a spring-pressed jockey pulley which can yield to allow the brush to move towards and from the skin. The knife 12 can be adjusted relatively to the blade 14 by means of sliding bearings and screw threaded adjustment rods. A hand-lever controls the movement of a jockey pulley, which can tighten or slacken the belt which drives the knife 12, which can thus be set in motion or stopped, as required. A clutch is provided for the feed-roller e of the apron, which can be adjusted by hand independently of the step-by-step ratchet gearing.
