Abstract

Distilling wine, wort, etc.; distilling and con- densing apparatus, general arrangement of; recti- fiers.-Relates to the distillation of phlegms, wines, fermented wort, and dilute alcoholic liquids generally, with the object of effecting their recti- fication or purification or of making brandy or fine liqueurs from them. The invention consists, broadly, in diluting the liquids to be treated to such a degree that amylic alcohol and other sub- stances, which usually form part of the tail pro- ducts, are removed by vaporization at the same time as the head products, so that only a mixture of alcohol and water descends to the bottom of the distilling-column. The liquid used for dilution is wine, or fermented distillers' wort or, preferably, hot water or hot liquid residuals from rectifying- columns or even hot low wines from which the alcohol is exhausted. Fig. 1 shows apparatus for carrying out the process. It consists of three superposed columnar stills 1, 2, 3, in the lowest of which the main distillation of the liquid takes place. The dilution takes place through the pipe 5 at the head of the column 2, in which the tail products are continually being vaporized, being drawn off through cocks 8. In the column 3 the head products are concentrated, and they are drawn off from the refrigerator R through the pipe 22. The supply of water to the condenser C is regulated by a float valve 18, which is actuated by the pressure of the vapours in the condenser C. The necessary modifications of the apparatus are described, when it is used (a) with an ordinary recti6er, (b) with apparatus for discontinuous rectification, and (c) with apparatus for the dilu- tion and purification of alcohol to be used in the manufacture of liqueurs.
