Abstract

2300. Stiker, F. P., and Burton, O. C. Jan. 28. Screwing.-Relates to a machine for screwing bolt blanks, having heads or necks with two parallel sides. The bolts slide down an inclined feed shoot 112, Fig. 55, hanging by their heads from ribs on the underside of the shoot which has a T-slot to receive the heads. The lower end of the shoot is closed by a spring finger 99, pivoted on the shoot and operated by a bevelled block on a rod 111 sliding on the shoot and actuated by a tappet on a cam shaft 146. The finger 99 is raised sufficiently to allow one bolt at a time to pass to a notched-disc carrier 95, the notches fitting the necks of the bolts. The carrier is mounted on a vertical spindle in a cylindrical slide 38 reciprocated in a barrel guide 38<c> on the machine framing. The upper end of the carrier spindle has a ratchet or pin wheel 172 normally locked by a spring catch 82 on the slide. As the slide ascends to the level of the feed shoot, the catch is disengaged by contact with a horizontal pawl 69 on a slide 21, which is then operated by a cam on the cam shaft to rotate the ratchet-wheel one tooth to bring a fresh notch opposite the feed shoot. The bolt in the carrier is brought into axial position with the slide 38 and a screwing-head contained in a casing 130, the bolt head moving in segmental guides on the lower end of the slide, concentric with the carrier and leading to the centre of the slide. When in the central position, the head 94 of the bolt is under a plunger on the slide which takes the end thrust due to the starting of the screwing. The slide is depressed by a lever 31 operated by a cam 13 on the cam shaft, to bring the lower end of the bolt into contact with the dies, the cam having a portion of its track pivoted to the cam disc and kept in its operative position by an adjustable spring which yields if excessive pressure arises during the starting of the screwing. The casing 130 prevents oil from flying from the dies, and the bead and its supporting-spindle are made hollow, to allow oil and chips to pass away. The screwing of the bolt pulls down the slide 38, which carries a tappet rod 126 with collars 127 engaging a lever 118 to open and close the dies at the required times. The screwing-head is mounted on a crosshead 4 which can be adjusted vertically by rack- and-pinion gearing 145 to suit long or short bolts. The head is driven by bevel gearing from a shaft 58 which also drives a cone shaft 148 through change gearing, the shaft 148 driving the cam shaft 146 by a belt 46<A> and cone pulleys. After the bolt is screwed, the slide is raised to its upper position, when the carrier is again moved round one step, the screwed bolt being guided into a discharge shoot 155.
