Abstract

1981. Schroeder, F. W. Jan. 24. Axle-caps; hubs; lubricating; spokes.-Relates to suspension or tension wheels having double wire spokes. Each spoke a is formed by doubling a wire of solid semicircular cross-section, and the bent end is fitted into longitudinal grooves b<1> in an externally screw-threaded nipple b, which is held stationary while an internally screw-threaded tube f, passed through a hole in the wheel-rim g, is screwed on. The free ends of the wire pass through a tubular nipple c, and one or both of them may be doubled to form an enlargement a<1> adapted to lie in an elliptical hollow in the nipple. The nipples and spokes are passed into correspondingly-shaped radial slots e', e<3> in the spoke flanges of the hub d, and when the tubes fare rotated the nipples c are drawn into the outer parts e<2> of the slots. The slots may be closed by a disc h, which screws on to the hub, and which may act as an oil-box. In modifications, the nipples b may be replaced by tubes i, Fig. 10, through which the doubled spokes are prevented from passing either by wedges or by doubling the spoke again ; the free ends a<1> of the spokes may be towards the rim ; each spoke may be formed from two separate wires instead of one doubled wire.
