Abstract

6217. Breyer, F. March 25. Feedwater, purifying.-Relates to a cold process for softening water, especially for steam raising. A pulverulent material, such as ground brick, slack, pumicestone, or kieselguhr, is stirred up in the water, to which caustic soda is at the same time added and afterwards lime. The constituents of the water which make it hard are thus caused to crystallize on the particles of the brick dust &c., which can then be easily removed by filtration. The brickdust &c., before being used, is preferably treated with calcium hydroxide by heating it with water and calcium hydroxide and subsequently cooling. Before filtration, the excess of alkalinity is diminished by passing carbon dioxide. Proportions &c. are specified.
