Abstract

22,924. Cleathero, E. T. Dec. 15. Feeding sheets.-Relates to feeding sheets to printing and other apparatus. Fig. 6 shows a view of the apparatus as regards the picking up and separating of the top sheet of paper X from the pile Y. One or more frames are mounted to be transversely or otherwise adjustable between the side frames of the machine. The paper lifter 13 is mounted on a lifting-rod, and is pivoted to a link 39 so as to move in an arc. The lifting-rod is operated by a lever pivoted on the shaft 19 and a cam on the shaft 20. Pivoted presser-arms 43 pass through loops on the sides of the lifter. Presser-feet 54 for holding the under sheets in position are actuated similarly to the lifter ; a heel 51 on the foot arm engaging with the stop 52 throws the foot rearwardly in its raised position. 57 is a suction arm for separating a lower sheet when two sheets are raised by the lifter. The pivot 60 of the suction arm 57 is formed as a tap so as to allow of the exhaust at the required moment only. 56 is a blast jet for freeing the top sheet. The suction and blast may be obtained by a reciprocating pump or a rotary fan driven from the main shaft. The paper Y is mounted on a board provided with lifting-screws. The screws are connected through bevel gearing with a ratchet-wheel. The ratchet-wheel is operated by a pawl, normally held free but allowed to engage with the wheel whenever the lifter 13 has to descend below its normal position. For this purpose the lifter rod has a stud 115 which engages with the heat 116 of the link 118 and through that link 119 and lever 120 for moving the pawl detent. In a modified form, presser-feet resting on the paper are connected to levers to control the pawl detent. The top sheet of paper raised by the lifter is fed forward to the tape rollers.110, 111 by means of pressure rollers 82 mounted on a shaft 83 attached to sleeves 87 capable of sliding on rods 88. The rods 88 are pivoted at 98, and are raised and lowered by cam-actuated levers 99. The sleeves are reciprocated by means of cam-actuated rods 104 and 105. The wheel 82 is rotated to feed the paper by means of a pawl 97 which is pivoted to a spring adjustable presser-frame 91.
