16,246. Jost, C., and Pell, A. Sept. 12. Pumps with reciprocating barrels or cylinders; pumps combined with filters; actuating pumps.- Relates to pumps for filters and other purposes. The pump consists of two cylinders, one a sliding over the other b, which has a neck capable of being pressed against a washer m to form a tight joint. The valve thus constituted is opened and closed by the friction between the two cylinders, the upward motion of the cylinder b being limited by pins i, i<1> engaging a bayonet slot formed in a socket surrounding the valve neck. The pump is actuated by a cam flange f engaging between a roller n' and clips n on the cylinder a. The filtering-candle C is fixed in the lever which operates the cam, the lever for this purpose consisting of the casing D closed by the handle q. The necessary air vent when starting is obtained by slightly unscrewing the handle q. An outlet g<1> from the cylinder a is connected by a flexible tube with a nipple on the casing D, and the filtered water flows away through the hollow axle of the cam f. The vessel o, for the water to be filtered may also serve to contain the pump &c. when packed. This vessel is fitted with ribs p' which engage the standards s of the pump. As modifications, the filtering-candle &c. may be placed in the cylinder a, or in a separate chamber connected to the cylinder a by a flexible pipe. Or the candle may be placed in the cylinder b or in a separate chamber connected thereto by a rigid pipe. In the two last cases a starting air vent is provided in the cylinder a.
