13,688. Brookes, A. G., [Pearse, T. H.]. July 31. Gins; burring-apparatus; openers &c. - The material is supplied on to an intermittentlymoving apron 22, by which it is fed to a lifting- apron 23. The latter is provided with a doffer 47, and carries the material at a uniform rate to a hopper 25 having an adjustable spring bottom. Near the mouth of this hopper are the adjustable knife 66 and the reciprocating clearer or comb 10 of the ginning-roller 5. The teeth of the comb 10 may have parallel sides and blunt ends, and be mounted to slide on a vertically-adjustable plate 12. The comb is made up of a number of sections arranged side by side and each operated by a pair of eccentrics on the shaft 14, the eccentrics which are connected with any particular section being in a different phase from those connected with the adjacent sections, so that the sections engage with the fibre successively and the vibration of the machine is considerably reduced. The knife 66 is provided with a curved plate 56 extending partly round the ginning-roller, and, if desired, an additional spring-plate 55 may be fitted round the lower portion thereof for the purpose of straightening out the ginned fibre, which is removed from the ginning-roller by a rotary brush 15 and driven along a passage 17 and over a grill 18, being finally delivered between the rollers 19, 20. Instead of the comb 10 being caused to reciprocate on a frame 12, it may be carried by a pivoted frame which is suitably oscillated, so that the path described by the comb teeth is curved instead of straight. Between the roller 5 and the doffing-brush 15 may be arranged a number of rollers similar to 5 and each provided with an adjustable casing similar to 55, the fibres being drawn and straightened while passing between the rollers and casings.
