Abstract

13,488. Bryan, F., and Bayley, A. H. July 26. Vapour engines; pistons; exhaust - silencers.- Liquefied air or gas is used expansively in combination with an internal-combustion, steam, or vapour engine, and the absorption of heat by the expanding air or gas is utilized as in the engine described in Specification No. 29,578, A.D. 1896, [Abridgment Class Air and gas engines]. Fig. 1 shows a motor cylinder D, in one end D', of which combustion takes place, and in the other, D<2>, the air is expanded. The exhaust from D<1> is utilized in a heater C to warm the air passing from the reservoir A to the end D<2>. The liquid air is supplied to the heater by a combined pump and rotating valve B. A port c' in the valve body B is presented alternately to the ports a<1> and c', and the charge is drawn in and forced out by a plunger d operated through a lever d' by a cam b<5> on the valve body. The piston E and cylinder cover on the compressed-air side are provided with corrugated intermeshing surfaces, to increase their heating capacity. The exhaust from the two motors may be mixed, to cool and silence them and render them invisible. The exhaust air may be used in the condenser of a steam or vapour engine, or in the furnace of a steam generator, to support combustion or to supply liquid fuel thereto, and either the exhaust or liquid air may form part of the combustible charge of the internal-combustion engine. Electricity or the heat of the atmosphere may be used for heating the liquid air, and the latter source is utilized on vehicles or boats.
