Abstract
6909. Stanley, J. C. W., and Cotton Seed Oil Syndicate. April 12. Drawings to Specification. Roller mills.-Relates to a process and apparatus for treating cotton seed from which the major portion of the cotton has been previously removed. After treatment the cotton seed is converted into kernel meal, hull meal, and cotton. The Specification describes an arrangement of apparatus certain parts of which are of special construction. The cotton seed is subjected to a preliminary sifting to separate all large and all small impurities, and is then passed to machines composed of grinding- rolls, beating-arms, and screens. These machines convert the seeds into two products, one of which consists of the huils with cotton and large pieces of kernel, while the other product consists of small portions of kernels with small fragments of hulls with cotton. The kernel meal is removed by sifting from the latter product, and is then passed over a fine-meshed reciprocating sieve which causes the cotton to ball while the kernel meal passes through the sieve. The coarse particles from which the kernel meal was removed are retained for treatment with the kernels to be separated from the hulls. The hulls from the above-mentioned grinding and beating machines are treated in special carding-machines provided with sieves. The carding-machines consist of two conical toothed drums working inside casings with corresponding internal teeth, and screens are arranged in the bottom of the casings and separate the kernels from the hulls, which are discharged with the cotton, as tailings, from the end of the second casing and passed to grinding and sifting apparatus, which separates them into hull meal and into balls or rolls of cotton. The large pieces of kernel separated during the above operations are together passed into a grinding-mill composed of three pairs of rolls with sieves which separate the kernel meal from the fragments of hulls, both of which products may be separated from the cotton in the manner described above.
