Abstract

13,827. Smith, M. H. July 4. Motor road vehicles.-Relates to variable-speed and reversing gearing. The driving-shaft A and the driven shaft D are coupled by a belt or chain embracing the step pulleys B, E, the adjacent steps of which are connected by conical shoulders. The shafts also carry friction-wheels C, F, and the shaft D is mounted in a pivoted frame G, provided with means for lifting and lowering, whereby the belt may be placed under tension for driving in the forward direction, or the friction-wheels may be brought into contact for reversing. The position of the frame may be regulated by a handwheel P on a spindle N, the lower end of which is threaded to receive a nut pivoted to the lever M ; to the opposite end of the lever the suspension link L is connected through springs l. The lever M is pivoted on a slide S, the upper end of which carries a friction roller s in contact with a cam T formed on the brake lever V ; when this lever is depressed to set on the brakes, the cam allows the slide to rise and the tension on the belt is relieved. The belt forks 1 are carried by slides 6, which are mounted on guide-bars W ; each slide has pivoted to it a pawl 7, adapted to engage with notches in the top of the bar W, and also a guide 9 through which passes a link 10 formed with notches and connected to the operating crank shaft 16 ; when this shaft is rotated, say in the direction shown by the arrow in Fig. 3, the link as it approaches the dead centre engages with the projecting tail of the pawl, and lifts it out of gear with the notch in the bar, and then, as the crank continues its movement, the slide is drawn along the bar until the pawl engages the next notch, and so on. The crank shaft may be connected by bevel gearing 17 to a hollow spindle mounted in the pillar 0 and provided with a handle 19 : this handle is formed with a lug, which at every revolution comes into contact with a pin on a wheel 20 which indicates the position of the belt.
