5367. Wetter, J., [Pittler, J. W. von]. March 4. Cigars; cigarettes.-Cigars or cigarettes are made of highly-compressed tobacco forced out through cylindrical tubes having cores which form air passages in the tobacco rod so produced. Fig. 10 shows one form of the apparatus. The tobacco is intermittently fed by wheels n, n<1> from the hopper s to the cylinder f, from which it is forced into a 'former' by the advance of the plunger e. Core-rods i are supported by the openwork disc h within the 'former,' which is surrounded by a steam or hot-water jacket. The rod passes out through a tube m, and by its friction with the wheel 8 operates mechanism which causes a knife to sever it at intervals into cigarettes. A vertical cylinder with a plunger operated by hydraulic pressure may supply a radiating series of tubes each of which forms a continuous tobacco rod. The cigars or cigarettes may be provided with a paper envelope applied as shown in Fig. 4. The paper strip t passes over the roller u, and its sides are bent upwards and over until it enters the tube m<1>, one edge being pasted by the wheel w.
